Nothing makes a great Christmas more than having great Christmas lights. Getting the right xmas lights is the surest way to show your family, the neighbors, and the whole wide world how you truly feel about this joyous time of giving and sharing, and that is the honest truth. Think about it for a second and I'm sure you'll admit that driving down a well lit street really helps enhance your mood. It's as if the warm glow of the lights helps take away some of the bitter chill outside.
There are many varieties of xmas lights and xmas decorations, from the simple to the sublime, but the key lies not in always finding just the perfect light strand or other ornament, but in varying them to really make your yard look spectacular. It is much better to have a variety of different xmas lights, such as the plain white ones (I love the white Christmas lights), the multi colored twinkling ones, the xmas chili pepper lights that give a southwestern flavor, and of course the ever popular snowmen, then to just have one single type of lighting going around your house, no matter how pretty it may look to you at the time.
Of course there are exceptions. If you are lucky enough to live on a block where everyone decorates with lights over the holiday season, then if you really like white Christmas lights, I say "go for it". Even if your house is all white, with everyone else decorating differently, it will look great. But if you're the only one on the block that goes all out, then add as much variety as you can to your xmas lights.
Of course, xmas lights and xmas decorating ideas can really go together to create a seamless whole that will make everything look fantastic. For example, a friend of mine incorporated xmas lights into his display to create a very lovely and nice look to his whole yard. He simply took a giant inflatable snowman and put him inside a cardboard sled that his kids helped him build. The sled was decorated with a lovely string of white xmas lights as was the snowman. Then, he strung multi-colored led xmas lights in front of the sled to show the path that it would be taking with its joyous cargo of gifts for all of the boys and girls out there. I have never really seen a xmas light display done so well.
And that was just the yard, you should have seen his house. The entire front of it was completely strung with miniature snowmen alternating with pumpkin lights left over from the last Halloween. Although it did not really fit in with the theme, he figured that it would be a shame to let it go to waste after all. It was beautiful, and proved that decorating for the holidays is not just a matter of stringing xmas lights haphazardly about the place and letting the blinking do everything. He was far too clever for that after all, as he said. Xmas lights are so much nicer looking if you think before you blink! I'm not exactly sure what that means, but if it means he keeps having great looking Christmas lights every year, then I'll have to agree with him.
Or course my goal is to have great looking lights every year as well, and I think we do a pretty good job. Our house is usually featured in the newspaper section of houses you need to see every year. Well maybe not our house in particular, but our block is. We are fortunate to live on a block filled with Christmas fanatics who go all our every year.
