Use Restraint When Putting Up Outdoor Christmas Decorations

I know the title of this article may seem a bit out of place coming from a Christmas fanatic like myself. But the truth is, I have had a tendency to overdo things in the past. Sometimes it's so hard to choose between outdoor Christmas decorations that the easiest choice is to make no choice. Simply use them all. This is the wrong approach.

Outdoor Christmas decorations come in many forms. Sometimes it is apparent that there are just too many choices available when you pass by certain houses in some neighborhoods. When it comes to outdoor Christmas decorations remember that sometimes less is more.

You wouldn’t wear a princess gown along with four diamond chokers and seven ruby bracelets. In the same regards you really don’t want to overdress your yard during the holiday season. While it is great to show a lot of spirit, too many outdoor Christmas decorations can really work against your overall effort.

The problem lies in the number of selections available in outdoor Christmas decorations. I have seen yards that have several moving optical reindeer surrounding a traditionally lighted Christmas tree. This in itself would be great if it weren’t for the other outdoor Christmas decorations cluttering the space. But when you add in the inflatable Christmas decorations such as the large Peanuts display, then add in the snowflake decorations, and the wooden lawn decorations, it gets to be a bit much.

One particular yard had all of the above and in addition, it boasted lighted palm trees, icicle lighting and several blow-up balloon decorations. The poor little yard was completely swallowed up by outdoor Christmas decorations. The whole scene scared the little kids in the neighborhood.

As tempting as it may be to go full throttle in the spirit of the holiday season it is best to show some restraint. There are ways to keep your self in check when dealing with outdoor Christmas decorations. Following a few simple guidelines will help you create a festive space without draining the nation’s supply of electricity in the process.

Choose a theme and stick with it. The Grinch Who Stole Christmas has no place hovering over a manger scene. Pick one theme and go from there. If you want to pay homage to the Grinch then work around the well known icon in your outdoor Christmas decorations. You can even use decorations of other famous Christmas characters. Leave the manger in storage for a year. If you want to focus on the manger then choose traditional decorations for your yard.

Just because you own it doesn’t mean that you have to use it each and every year. Maybe you love the Nutcracker fiber optic set that you bought but you want to create a traditional country Christmas decorations theme. The Nutcracker outdoor Christmas decorations can stay in storage until next year.

The winter holidays are a time of great excitement. It can be very difficult to restrain yourself from overdoing it when it comes to outdoor Christmas decorations. However, if you consider those who pass by your home during this wonderful season you may want to keep things simple. We only have a moment in passing to take everything in.

I know there are those drivers that will park outside an excessively decorated house and try to see it all. But these are few and far between. Most people are too busy with their lives. And even if their out on a tour of Christmas lights, there are probably many other displays they want to get to.
