Why I Prefer Artificial Christmas Trees

It's a debate every year in some families, do we get another live tree or is this the year we finally break down and buy artificial Christmas trees. However in my family, there is no debate.

I know that I'm in the minority here, but I've always preferred artificial Christmas trees to real ones. A lot of my friends really get on me about my preference, saying that the holidays just aren't the same with a fake tree. I don't buy into that belief at all, of course. The holidays are what you make of them, and artificial Christmas trees can definitely be enjoyed every bit as much as the real thing.

There are several big reasons that I like artificial Christmas trees so much. First of all, there are some really beautiful, authentic-looking artificial Christmas trees these days. When I was a kid, I remember that our fake tree looked so patently fake that it was actually a bit funny. Then, after a couple years of packing and unpacking it, the branches got all bent and broken. It looked pretty pathetic after a while! But today's artificial Christmas trees are made from high-quality materials that last for years and years. I've had mine for about four Christmases already and it still looks as good as the day I first took it out of the box.

The second reason that I prefer artificial Christmas trees is that there isn't any mess to deal with and I don't have to drag the tree out to the curb after the holidays. With a real tree, I would constantly have to vacuum and pick up all the needles that fall off, plus I would have to monitor the tree for the ugly brown patches that soon start appearing on the dead branches. With everything else that needs my attention during the holidays, dealing with these additional minor annoyances is something that I can do without. With artificial Christmas trees, all I have to do is set it up and forget it. There's absolutely no upkeep required at all.

A third reason that I like artificial Christmas trees is that they are available with pre-strung lighting or even with fiber optic lighting. I don't know about you, but I hate trying to untangle these long light cords after they've been in storage for most of the year. With pre-strung lighting on artificial Christmas trees, I never have to worry about that. Fiber optic lighting is also a nice option that can really make artificial Christmas trees sparkle and shine. Prelit Christmas trees are, in my mind, the best thing since sliced bread.

With all that we gain by having an artificial Christmas tree, I sat down a few years back and tried to figure out all that we are losing with a fake Christmas tree. My list stopped at one item - the fresh pine smell. When I weigh the pros mentioned above with the one con, the decision seems like a no brainer to me.

The most difficult thing for some with a fake tree is the Christmas tree storage. Well we've got the space available so that becomes a non-factor in our decision.

As you can see artificial Christmas trees are completely hassle-free once they're set up, which means you'll have free time to enjoy the more important aspects of the holidays. So check out some artificial Christmas trees today and see how much they've improved since your childhood.

Here's another big advantage, the cost. Yes it will cost more in year one, but after a few years an artificial tree will pay for itself. And you won't have to freeze while you're picking it out. In fact you don't even have to leave the house if you don't want to. There are some incredible trees available online.
